The art of delegation

Section 4 : Set clear expectations and provide feedback

80%

Setting clear expectations from the beginning helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures that the delegated task aligns with your vision. Be very specific about the standards and outcomes you expect and clarify the level of autonomy the person has in making decisions related to the task.

After the task is completed, provide constructive feedback. Acknowledge what was done well and discuss any areas for improvement. Feedback is a valuable tool for learning and growth, helping your team members refine their skills and perform better in future tasks. Recognising their efforts also boosts morale and motivation.

Be patient, especially at the beginning, as your team members may need time to adjust to new responsibilities. Mistakes can happen, but they are part of the learning process. Encouraging an open and supportive environment allows for constructive dialogue and continuous improvement. Your patience and guidance will help build their confidence and competence, ultimately benefiting the entire team. Not doing that can lead to frustration, demotivation and a lack of initiative to take on new challenges or responsibilities. Without proper support and encouragement, team members may hesitate to step out of their comfort zones, limiting their growth and the overall potential of the team. Nurture an environment that values learning and development to ensure that everyone feels empowered to contribute and excel.
