As overused as it may sound, your team does, in fact, mirror your actions. The adage "actions speak louder than words" becomes even more significant during times of uncertainty. As a leader, your team looks to you for guidance and reassurance. Leading by example means embodying the qualities you want to see in others - resilience, optimism and a readiness to adapt.
If budget cuts necessitate sacrifices for example, demonstrate your commitment by being the first to implement cost-saving measures personally. Forego certain perks or streamline expenses in your own workflow if you have to. Showing that you’re all in this together builds a sense of solidarity and trust. When your actions align with your words, you create credibility that motivates your team to follow suit willingly and wholeheartedly.
Unfortunately, many founders fall into the trap of expecting and even demanding others to shoulder the burdens of change while maintaining a different standard for themselves. Leadership in uncertain times doesn’t mean eliminating risks but navigating them with integrity and composure. Staying present, maintaining focus and modelling the behaviours you wish to see inspires your team to move forward, even when the future feels unclear.
